Extra kilometres cost AED 0.50 to 0.60 on the vans and pickup; trucks on long Abu Dhabi runs are quoted by route. If the same run repeats every week, a monthly contract buys 3,500 km up front and usually beats paying the overage. Darb tolls, including the E11 gate at Ghantoot that now charges at any hour, are passed on at cost.

Size the vehicle from the home rather than the furniture list. A studio or a one-bedroom flat usually fits a Toyota Hiace, a two-bedroom flat needs the longer Ford Transit, and a villa is a job for a 5-tonne truck with a driver. Between two sizes, the bigger vehicle doing one trip is cheaper than the smaller one doing two, especially when each trip is 140 km long.

A one-day move from Dubai to Abu Dhabi island in a Hiace shows how the bill builds. The return drive is about 280 km, so 130 km fall outside the daily allowance; at AED 0.50 a kilometre that adds AED 65 to the AED 180 day rate, before fuel and tolls. The same move in a Transit is AED 250 plus about AED 78 at AED 0.60 a kilometre. Add AED 250 if one of our drivers does the driving.

Towers on Al Reem Island and along the Corniche, and the newer blocks on Yas and Saadiyat, run moves through the building. Expect to book the service lift and a loading slot through building management, often with a few days’ notice, and to be given the hours when moves are allowed. Settle both ends before you book the van: a loaded van waiting outside a tower with no lift slot is the most expensive hour of the day.

A move that starts in Dubai passes Salik gates on the way out and the Darb gate at Ghantoot on the way in, and the van still has to come back. Starting early keeps the drive out of the hottest part of the day and leaves daylight for unloading at the other end.

A move that stays inside Abu Dhabi is a different job. From the island out to Khalifa City or Mohammed Bin Zayed City and back is well inside the 150 km a day includes, so a single day rate covers it, and the choice of vehicle comes down to the size of the home and what the building at each end allows.

Most large sites ask the contractor to register a delivery in advance: the vehicle plate, the driver’s name and Emirates ID, and a time slot. Some also require the driver to sit a short site induction, or to wear safety boots and a high-visibility vest before stepping out of the cab. Site roads are often unpaved or half-built, and an overloaded pickup or a truck sunk in soft sand becomes a recovery job. Tell us if the drop point is off the asphalt, plan the payload well under the limit when the ground is loose, and keep to the routes the site has marked.

Anything on an open bed has to be secured and covered before it leaves the supplier’s yard, and site security checks that as well. Sand, blocks or offcuts blowing off a pickup on the E11 means a fine for the driver and a hazard for everyone behind. The 3 ton pickup suits dense loads such as blocks and cement; the 1-tonne suits lighter materials and tools.
