The body
Inside a van-based chiller
A Hiace chiller is a panel van with a cold box built inside it, not a truck with a box on the back. That shapes what fits and how it behaves.
The conversion lines the van’s steel shell with insulated panels on the walls, floor and roof, and a refrigeration unit on the roof blows cold air into the box. Insulation takes thickness from every surface, so the space inside is noticeably smaller than the same Hiace as a dry van. That is why this page publishes no load dimensions: the figures printed for a dry Hiace do not apply, and conversions differ from one van to the next. If a load is close to filling the van, ask for the internal measurements of the exact unit you are being given.
The rear doors are the van’s own swing doors, lined and fitted with seals rather than replaced by a shutter, and they open wide for crates and trays. Those seals do most of the work of keeping heat out, so a torn or flattened one matters more here than on a heavy truck door. Ask whether the unit allocated to you has a working side door as well, because some conversions keep it and some build it into the insulated wall.
The unit on the roof also makes the van taller than an ordinary Hiace. That rarely matters in the street, but it does at basement car parks and covered loading bays, where the barrier height is signed at the entrance. The small chiller fits most places a van goes, not all of them, so check the signed height against the overall height of the unit you are given before committing to a basement drop.
When to choose it
A smaller body is often the right answer
Chilled goods are usually bulky rather than heavy, so the deciding factor is the route, not the weight. These are the jobs where the small van wins.
Tight residential delivery
Deira, Karama, Al Nahda, Satwa. Streets and service entrances where a 3-tonne body simply cannot turn or park.
Small daily rounds
A cafe group, a florist or a single restaurant supply route, where a bigger van would run half empty every morning.
Short market runs
Early collection from Al Aweer or the fish market for one or two customers, back before the traffic builds.
Licence and driver

Why people ask for a Hiace chiller van
Our 1-tonne chiller is usually a Toyota Hiace panel body with a roof-mounted refrigeration unit. People ask for it by name for one reason more than any other, and it is not the size.
It stays inside a car licence
This is the one refrigerated vehicle in the fleet you can drive on a standard UAE light vehicle licence. The next size up, the 3-ton chiller, is rated above that category and needs a heavier licence or one of our drivers. For a small business without a truck licence, that is the whole decision.
It parks where a chiller truck cannot
Deira, Karama, Satwa, older parts of Bur Dubai — loading bays are short and ramps are tight. A Hiace chiller gets into the same spaces a normal van does, which matters more on a twelve-drop round than an extra metre of body.
It costs less to run a small round
If you are moving a few hundred kilos of chilled stock a day, a 3-ton chiller is more vehicle than the job needs. The smaller body also pulls down to temperature faster after each door opening.

Licence
Why the licence answer is “usually”
Most people want a straight yes or no on whether a car licence covers this van. The honest answer depends on one line of the vehicle’s paperwork.
A UAE licence category is matched against the vehicle’s rated weight, and that rating is printed on its registration card, the Mulkiya, not on the badge. As a dry panel van a Hiace sits in the light vehicle class. A refrigeration conversion adds the weight of the insulated box and the unit, and the rating on the card is what settles which licence the converted van needs.
So two things are checked before handover: the categories printed on the driver’s licence, and the rating on the Mulkiya of the van being allocated. Send a photo of the driver’s licence with the booking and the answer comes back days before the job, not at the yard on the morning.
If the answer is no, the job still goes ahead. Either a colleague with the right category drives, or one of our drivers takes the van at AED 250 a day, and your own staff stay free for the deliveries themselves.

Capacity
What 1,000 kg of chilled stock looks like
In a small insulated van the space and the weight run out at roughly the same time, and which one goes first depends entirely on what is being carried.
Drinks and dairy use up the weight first. A litre of milk weighs just over a kilogram, so a case of twelve one-litre cartons is about 13 kg and around 75 cases reach the payload. Bottled juice, yoghurt and blocks of cheese behave the same way: the van looks half empty when it is already full.
Flowers, bakery and prepared food use up the space first. Buckets of cut flowers, trays of pastries and catering boxes are light for their size, so the insulated box fills long before the weight becomes a concern. A florist or bakery round is planned by counting buckets or trays against the space, not by kilograms.
Mixed rounds need both checks. A café group’s morning order of milk, pastries and fruit can reach the payload on the milk alone. Count the heavy chilled drinks first, work out what they weigh, and only then fill the remaining space with the light items.
Early rounds
Running an early café, bakery or pharmacy round
The 1-ton chiller earns its keep on short rounds that finish before the city is fully awake. Those rounds bring problems of their own.
Deliveries before the shop opens
Many cafés and bakeries want stock in before they open, when nobody is there to sign for it. Never leave chilled product outside a closed door, even for ten minutes in the early morning: agree a key, a rear-door code or a person on site, and put the stock straight into the customer’s fridge. A delivery left on a step is a delivery the customer is entitled to refuse.
One door at a time
If your van has a side door, never open it together with the rear doors. Air then runs straight through the box and carries the cold out in seconds. Pull the next order towards the door you will use before you stop, open only that door, and close it before carrying the order inside.
Medicines on a small round
Pharmacy stock is usually specified at 2 to 8 °C, which sits inside the cool setting this van holds; the medicine and vaccine transport guide covers that round in full. Keep medicines in their own sealed totes, apart from any food, and note the temperature at loading and at each handover, because a pharmacy asks for that record far more often than a café does.
Flowers that do not like the cold
Most cut flowers travel best just above freezing, but tropical varieties such as orchids, anthuriums and heliconias are damaged by cold and should not ride in a box set to +2 °C. Ask the florist for the temperature each variety needs before the round is set up, and keep buckets upright and wedged so water does not slop across the floor at every corner.

Can I drive it on a normal car licence?
Usually, yes — this class sits below the 3-tonne threshold that forces a heavier licence. Send us your licence category before you book and we will confirm it rather than let you find out at handover.
Is it cold when I collect it?
Yes. The unit is started at our yard before the van leaves, so the insulated box is already at your setting when it reaches you.
How much does it cost?
Ask us for your dates. It sits below the 3-ton chiller van, which starts at AED 380 a day, but we would rather quote you a real figure for the actual vehicle than publish one we cannot always honour.
Can it hold frozen at −18 °C?
Yes, with the same caveat as any refrigerated body: load the product already frozen, and keep the door time short at each stop.
Is it available monthly?
Yes. Most small chiller work is a daily route, which is exactly the case where a monthly contract costs far less than repeated daily hires.
Is this the same as a small refrigerated van?

Can I hire it for a single event?
Yes. It suits an event with a modest amount of chilled food or drink, such as a private party, a small launch or a catering drop at a villa. Tell us the venue, the arrival time and the temperature, and we will give you the rate for that day and confirm the van reaches its setting before it leaves the yard.
Does the unit keep cooling when the engine is switched off?
No. On a van like this the unit is driven by the engine, so cooling stops when the engine does. Keep stops short and the doors shut, and where it is safe and allowed, leave the engine running during a longer drop rather than switching off with stock on board.
