What licence do you need to drive a van or truck in Dubai?
The question that stops more bookings than price does. The short version: a normal car licence covers our panel vans, and anything built to carry more than two tonnes does not.

A standard UAE light vehicle licence — the one you drive a car on — covers the panel vans. Once a vehicle weighs more than 2.5 tonnes empty, or is built to carry more than two tonnes, it sits in a heavier category and needs the matching licence.

Licence categories are set by the RTA, not by us, and they are updated from time to time. Treat this as what we check at handover — if your situation is unusual, confirm your own category with the RTA before you book.

Categories
What the categories on a UAE licence actually mean
A UAE licence is not one permission. The card lists the types of vehicle you are allowed to drive, and vans and trucks fall into different ones.
The everyday licence is the light vehicle category, the one almost everyone in Dubai holds. It covers cars, SUVs, pickups and panel vans up to roughly three and a half tonnes of gross weight, which is why all four of our panel vans and the 1-tonne pickup sit inside it.
Above that sits the heavy vehicle category, for trucks beyond that weight. It is not an add-on you can take from scratch: applicants normally have to hold the light licence first and be older than the minimum age for a car, then train and test separately. Buses have their own categories again, split by how many passengers they carry, and there are further categories for tractors and heavy machinery that never come up in van hire.
The number that decides which category applies is the vehicle’s gross weight on its registration card, not what it carries. That is the single most misread fact in this whole subject, and the 3 ton pickup guide shows what it does to a vehicle whose name sounds as though it should be inside a car licence. Categories and their exact thresholds belong to the RTA, so confirm your own with them if your case is unusual.
Foreign licences
Visitors, new residents and licences from abroad
Whether your licence works here depends less on the licence and more on your status in the country.
Visitors and tourists from a long list of countries — the GCC, most of Europe, the UK, the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and others — can drive a rental vehicle on their home licence for the length of the visit. If that licence is not in English or Arabic, carry an International Driving Permit with it, or an official translation. The permit never replaces the licence; it accompanies it.
The rule changes the moment you hold a residence visa. A resident cannot drive on a home licence or an international permit and must hold a UAE licence. Many nationalities can exchange their existing licence for one without sitting a test, and the list of eligible countries has grown over the years; everyone else takes the full training and test route.
This is the most common reason a booking stalls on collection day: someone who has just moved here is still carrying the licence they arrived with, and their visa has already been issued. Send us a photograph of the licence and tell us your visa status when you enquire. We will tell you which vehicles you can take, and if the answer is none of them, a van with one of our drivers solves it the same day.

What we actually check before handing over keys
Nothing here is designed to catch you out. We check it because our insurance depends on it, and because an unlicensed driver stopped at a checkpoint is a much worse day than a delayed booking.
The licence itself
Valid, in date, and in the right category for the vehicle you booked. A photo on your phone is not enough — bring the card or the digital licence in the UAE Pass app.
Emirates ID
Front and back. Residents only. Visitors bring a passport with the visa page instead.
Who is actually driving
The person named on the contract is the person insured. If someone else will drive, tell us at booking so we can add them properly.
For companies
A trade licence and a letter naming the driver, on company paper. Send it ahead and collection takes minutes instead of an afternoon.

How to read your own licence before you book
Everything you need to answer this question is already printed on the card in your wallet, or in the app on your phone.
Find the line that lists the vehicles you are permitted to drive. On a UAE card it is written in words rather than left to guesswork, and light vehicle is what most people will see. If a heavier category has been added, it appears there too. That line, and not the year you have been driving, is what we check at handover.
Then look at the expiry date, and look at it again if you are booking a long hire. A licence that runs out three weeks into a monthly contract has to be renewed before the vehicle goes out again, and renewals are quicker to arrange in advance than in the middle of a delivery week.
The digital licence in the UAE Pass app is accepted, so a card left at home is not the problem it used to be, though a photograph of the card in your gallery is not the same thing. If you are not sure what your licence allows, send us a picture of it before you book and you will have a written answer the same day.
Insurance
Why the contract names the driver
The licence question is really an insurance question, and insurance attaches to a person, not just to a vehicle.
The person named on the hire contract is the person the cover is written around. If someone else takes the wheel, even briefly and even with a perfectly valid licence, the vehicle is being driven outside the agreement, and an insurer is entitled to decline a claim on that basis alone. It costs nothing to add a second driver at the booking stage, and it costs a great deal not to.
On a company contract the same logic runs through the authorisation letter. It names who may drive, which is what connects a fine, a Salik crossing or an accident to a particular person rather than simply to the plate. Drivers can be added and swapped during a contract; the important part is telling us before the swap, not after it.
If a job suddenly needs a different driver, a phone call and a photo of their licence is usually enough to have them added the same day. That is a far better outcome than the alternative, which is a delivery going out on a contract that does not cover the person driving.

Three ways round a licence you do not have
Take a driver
AED 250 a day for up to nine hours. This is what most people do for the 3-tonne chiller and every truck. It also means someone who has reversed into that loading bay before is doing it.
Drop a size
A Ford Transit carries 3.4 m of load on a normal licence. Two Transit runs often beat waiting a week to sort a heavier licence.
Name someone else
If a colleague holds the right category, put them on the contract. Send us the licence before collection day, not on it.
Getting one
Taking the heavy licence, or taking a driver
For a business that keeps needing a truck, the choice is between training someone and hiring the skill. The arithmetic is worth doing once.
A heavy licence in the UAE is a course, not a form. Training runs at an approved driving institute, with classroom and practical hours and separate tests, and it takes weeks rather than days. Anyone starting from scratch usually needs the light licence first, so the realistic timeline for a member of staff who does not yet drive is longer again.
Set against that, a driver from us is AED 250 for a day of up to nine hours. Twenty days of truck work is AED 5,000 of driver time. If your trucks run most days of the month, training or hiring a licensed driver pays for itself quickly. If they run a week a month, the driver is simply cheaper, and you are also buying somebody who has reversed into that dock before. The van with driver page sets out how those days are counted.
What happens if you drive without the right category
Nothing good, and the first consequence lands before you leave the yard: we cannot release a vehicle to a licence that does not cover it, because the insurance would not answer for it. If someone does drive a category they do not hold, they are committing a traffic offence, the vehicle can be impounded, and an insurer has a clean reason to decline a claim — which turns a bent bumper into a bill for the whole vehicle. For a company, the exposure sits with the business as well as the driver.
Licence questions
Can I drive a van in Dubai on my home country licence?
It depends on your status. Visitors from some countries can drive on their own licence or an international permit; residents need a UAE licence. Send us a photo of what you hold and your visa status and we will tell you before you pay anything.
Does a 3-ton chiller van really need more than a car licence?
Yes. Despite the word van, it is rated above the light vehicle category. This surprises people often enough that we mention it on the vehicle page too.
What happens if I turn up with the wrong licence?
We cannot release the vehicle — the insurance would not cover you. We will either swap you to something your licence does cover, or add a driver, if either is available that day. Sending your licence ahead avoids the whole problem.
Is a driver included on the truck rates?
No, the truck rates are for the vehicle. A driver is AED 250 a day on top. See the rate card for the full picture.
Can my company rent and let staff drive?
Yes, that is most of our long-term work. We need the trade licence and a letter naming each driver, plus their licence and Emirates ID. Drivers can be added or swapped during the contract.
Do you check the licence again on a monthly contract?
We check expiry dates. If a licence runs out mid-contract we will ask for the renewed one before the vehicle goes out again.
Is an international driving permit enough if I live in the UAE?
No. An international permit works alongside a home licence for visitors only. Once you hold a residence visa you need a UAE licence, and depending on your nationality that is either an exchange without a test or the full training and test route.
