Chiller truck sizes in Dubai: 1, 3, 5, 7 and 10 tonne compared

The tonnage in the name is the load, not the truck, and it tells you nothing about how many pallets fit. Here are the measured bodies, the pallet counts they really take, and the weight that runs out first.

The naming

A 3 ton chiller truck is a 3,000 kg load

Every enquiry that starts with a tonnage is really two questions, and the tonnage answers only one of them.

In the UAE the number in front of a commercial vehicle is its payload. A 3 ton chiller truck is rated to carry 3,000 kg of goods; the vehicle underneath weighs a good deal more than that before anything is loaded. The same convention runs through the whole range, so a 5 ton reefer carries 5,000 kg and a 10 ton carries 10,000 kg. The naming trap is unpicked in full in what a 3 ton pickup actually means, and it works exactly the same way on refrigerated bodies.

What the tonnage does not tell you is the floor. Two vehicles can both be rated at three tonnes and have bodies a metre apart in length, because the body is built onto the chassis rather than supplied with it. That is why a payload figure on its own cannot answer the question people are really asking, which is how much of their stock goes in one load.

The words around the tonnage vary too. Chiller van, chiller truck, freezer truck and reefer all describe the same piece of equipment: an insulated body with a refrigeration unit set to a temperature. The setting is what separates a chiller from a freezer, not the vehicle, and chiller van, freezer van or reefer truck sets that out properly.

So the useful comparison is not between tonnages at all. It is between three numbers on each vehicle: the floor it gives you, the pallets that floor takes, and the weight you are allowed to put on it.

The sizes

What each refrigerated size actually measures

These are the bodies we run, with the figures published on each vehicle page. Bodies are fabricated to order, so treat them as the measurements of our vehicles rather than of a category.

5-Tonne Truck5.2 × 2.1 × 2.1 mAbout 23 m³5,000 kgHeavy
10-Tonne Truck7.5 × 2.4 × 2.4 mAbout 43 m³10,000 kgHeavy

The step people underestimate is the first one. A 1-Ton Chiller Van is a panel van with an insulated body: it takes crates, cartons and roll cages through a rear or side door, by hand, and it is the only refrigerated vehicle in the range an ordinary car licence covers. Nothing goes into it on a pallet, because there is no way to get a pallet in.

From the 3-Ton Chiller Van upwards you are in box bodies, loaded at a dock or by forklift, and every one of them needs a heavy vehicle licence or one of our drivers. The 3-tonne is the smallest of those, and at 4.2 m of floor it is the size most restaurant and cold-store rounds in Dubai are built around.

Above it, the 5-Tonne and 10-Tonne trucks come with either a dry box or a refrigerated one. The refrigerated versions are what people mean by a reefer truck, and they are the vehicles behind refrigerated truck rental. The jump from 5.2 m to 7.5 m of floor is the largest single step in the range, and it is where pallet-scale distribution starts.

Pallets

How many pallets each body really takes

Pallet counts are the figure quoted most often and checked least often. These come from the floor measurements above, worked out in the two pallet sizes used here.

VehicleEuro pallets 1.2 × 0.8 mStandard pallets 1.2 × 1.0 m
3-Ton Chiller Van6 (2 across, 3 deep)4 (1 across, 4 deep)
5-Tonne Truck8 (2 across, 4 deep)8 (2 across, 4 deep)
10-Tonne Truck18 (3 across, 6 deep)12 to 14, depending which way they are turned

Take the 3-tonne as the worked example. The floor is 4.2 m long and 1.9 m wide. Two euro pallets sit side by side across that width, because 0.8 m and 0.8 m is 1.6 m, and three rows of 1.2 m run down the length to 3.6 m. That is six pallets on the floor with 0.3 m spare across the body and 0.6 m spare at the doors, which is space for a stillage, a stack of crates or the strapping you need rather than for a seventh pallet.

Standard pallets are wider, so the same body takes four rather than six. That single figure explains most of the disappointment we hear about 3-tonne bookings: a round planned on six pallets arrives, the pallets turn out to be 1.2 by 1.0 m, and two of them have no floor to stand on.

The 5-tonne takes eight of either kind, which is why it is the size most wholesalers settle on. The 10-tonne is where euro pallets pull ahead: three fit across 2.4 m exactly, six rows fit down 7.5 m, and you are carrying eighteen. In standard pallets the same body is twelve to fourteen, because the geometry stops being neat.

Two cautions on all of these. They are floor counts, one layer high, with no overhang: stacking a second layer depends entirely on what is on the pallet, not on the truck. And they assume pallets loaded square. Send us your pallet size and the number you need to move and we will tell you which body takes them, and measure the actual vehicle if it is close.

Weight

Why the weight runs out before the floor does

Divide the payload by the pallets and you get the number that actually limits a cold-chain load.

Notice what that does to the comparison: the 10-tonne does not let you load a heavier pallet than the 5-tonne, it lets you load more of them.

VehiclePayloadEuro palletsWeight per pallet
3-Ton Chiller Van3,000 kg6500 kg
5-Tonne Truck5,000 kg8625 kg
10-Tonne Truck10,000 kg18About 555 kg

Whether 500 kg a pallet is generous depends entirely on the goods. Bottled water and soft drinks reach it easily; a pallet of one-litre bottles is a tonne on its own if it is stacked full, so the weight limit is met long before the body looks busy. Frozen meat and cheese behave the same way. Leafy produce, bakery, packed sandwiches and most prepared food do not come close, and those rounds run out of floor and door openings rather than kilograms.

This is the fastest way to size a refrigerated vehicle honestly. Take the heaviest pallet on the round and multiply it by the number of pallets. If that total is under the payload, the floor decides the vehicle. If it is over, the payload decides it, and a bigger body will not help unless you also step up the tonnage.

Payload also counts everything else on board. Pallets themselves weigh something, so do dollies, blankets, empty crates going back to the depot and any ice you are packing around fish. On a round that is already near the line, those extras are the difference between legal and overloaded.

The cold box

What refrigeration takes away from the space

A refrigerated body of a given size never gives you as much usable room as a dry box of the same size, and the reasons are worth knowing before you plan a load.

Insulation is the first. The walls, floor and roof of a cold body are thick, so a truck that measures the same as a dry one on the outside measures less inside. The figures in the table above are the internal ones for our vehicles, which is the only measurement worth planning around.

The unit is the second. On a box body the evaporator sits at the front, inside the load space, and it needs air to move around it. A load pressed flat against it will read a perfect temperature at the gauge and leave the goods at the back warm, which is a loading fault rather than a fault with the vehicle.

Height is the third, and the one most often over-planned. You can measure 1.9 m inside a 3-tonne body, but you cannot fill all of it: cold air has to get over the top of the load and back to the unit. Stack to something short of the roof and leave the channel, especially on a frozen load where the difference between the front and the back of the body is largest.

Finally, the body holds one temperature at a time. There is no partition, so a mixed frozen and chilled round is either two runs, two vehicles, or insulated boxes inside the body for the smaller half of the load.

The 7-tonne

The 7 ton chiller truck question

Plenty of UAE fleets advertise a 7 ton chiller truck, and people search for it by name. We do not run one, and it is worth explaining what that means for you rather than pretending otherwise.

The 7-tonne sits between the two sizes we do run. It is the vehicle operators reach for when a 5-tonne round has grown but a 10-tonne would travel half empty, and on paper the appeal is obvious. In practice the decision is usually settled by the pallet count rather than by the tonnage, because that is the number that stops a round, and on that measure the choice is between eight pallets and eighteen.

So the question to ask is which side of eight your round sits on. If it is nine or ten pallets, a 7-tonne looks attractive, but two runs of the 5-tonne or a single 10-tonne will usually cost less over a month than sourcing a size nobody has free. If it is fourteen or more, the 10-tonne is the answer whatever the middle sizes offer.

If you do go looking for a 7-tonne elsewhere, ask the same three questions we have used here: the internal body measurement, the pallet count on your pallet size, and the payload. A tonnage on its own is not a specification, and any operator who cannot give you the three numbers is quoting a category rather than a vehicle.

Choosing

Which size suits which round

Four shapes of cold-chain work cover most of what we are asked for in Dubai, and each one points at a size before the tonnage is even mentioned.

Small, frequent drops in dense districts are 1-tonne work. Fifteen restaurant or pharmacy stops through Deira, Karama and Al Nahda are limited by parking and door openings, not by volume, and the van that gets to the door beats the truck that has to stop at the end of the street. It is also the one your existing staff can drive.

A full morning round from a cold store to six or eight kitchens is the 3-tonne. Six euro pallets, a driver who can reverse onto a dock, and a body small enough for a mall service entrance: that is the ordinary shape of a restaurant supply run, and the reason the 3-tonne is our most-booked refrigerated vehicle.

Wholesale and hypermarket deliveries are 5-tonne work. Eight pallets, dock-height loading and inter-emirate legs where the mileage matters more than the manoeuvring. Above that, a distribution run serving several stores in one trip, or a transfer between cold stores, is the 10-tonne: eighteen euro pallets in one movement is the whole argument for it.

If the round does not fit any of those neatly, tell us the number of drops, the pallet size and the heaviest pallet, and we will name the vehicle. Rates for every size are on the rate card, and if the answer is a smaller vehicle than you asked for, we will say so.

Chiller truck size questions

How many pallets fit in a 3 ton chiller truck?

Six euro pallets of 1.2 by 0.8 m, two across and three deep on a 4.2 by 1.9 m floor, or four standard pallets of 1.2 by 1.0 m. Those are floor counts in a single layer. At full payload that is about 500 kg a pallet.

What is the internal size of a 5 ton refrigerated truck?

Ours measures 5.2 m long, 2.1 m wide and 2.1 m high inside, which is about 23 m³, with a payload of 5,000 kg. Bodies are built to order, so ask for the measurements of the specific vehicle before you plan a pallet layout around them.

Do you have a 7 ton chiller truck?

No. We run 1 and 3-tonne refrigerated vans and 5 and 10-tonne refrigerated trucks. If your round is around nine or ten pallets, tell us and we will price it both ways rather than send you looking for a size we cannot supply.

Does a 3 ton chiller van need a heavy licence?

Yes. A UAE car licence covers goods vehicles that weigh up to 2.5 tonnes empty and carry up to 2 tonnes, so anything built to carry three tonnes is past it. The 1-Ton Chiller Van is the only refrigerated vehicle we run on a car licence. The detail is in the licence guide, and a driver is AED 250 a day for up to nine hours.

Can one truck carry frozen and chilled together?

Not in one compartment. The body holds a single setting between −18 °C and +5 °C for the whole run, and there is no partition. Run the frozen goods at their band and carry the chilled portion in insulated boxes, or split the round into two runs.

Is a 10 ton reefer twice the truck of a 5 ton?

In floor and pallets, close to it: 7.5 m against 5.2 m, and eighteen euro pallets against eight. In weight per pallet it is not, because 10,000 kg over eighteen pallets works out at about 555 kg each, against 625 kg on the 5-tonne. More pallets, not heavier ones.

Send us the pallets, not the tonnage

Tell us the pallet size, how many you move, the heaviest one and the temperature. We will name the vehicle that takes them, and measure the actual body if your load is close to the line.
